Self-Tanning Gel

What is the color range?
Light to medium, but the final color depends on how the active ingredient (dihydroxyacetone) reacts with the protein in the top layers of your skin.

How long does the color last?
That depends on how well it "takes" on your skin. Results often vary widely with the same self-tanner. On some the color may last a week or more, while others find it lasts 2 days or fewer.

How often should I apply the Self-Tanning Gel?
That depends on how much color you want. If your initial application was not dark enough for you, reapply the next day and keep reapplying until the desired depth of color is achieved. Then, reapply every 2–3 days to maintain your tan.

Is this ok to use on your face? Even if you have oily/combination skin?
Yes, this product is well-suited for the face, even if you have very oily skin. The light gel formula is quickly absorbed and not at all greasy.

How do I exfoliate my body?
Use a body scrub, a washcloth or synthetic bath sponge, or mix baking soda and your body wash to form a thin, paste-like consistency. For stubborn areas (knees, heels, elbows), exfoliate the skin while dry, then wet skin to rinse.

Do I have to exfoliate every time?
We recommend this for best results, but it is not required.

I made a mistake. How can I remove it and start over?
Use Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid – the self-tanner will come off right before your eyes!

Does it smell?
Dihydroxyacetone has a characteristic sweet odor. Some people do not mind or notice this, while others do. In almost all cases, the natural scent of dihydroxyacetone fades in less than a day.

If I apply this and lay out in the sun, will I get darker?
No, although if you tan naturally you will look darker. Self-tanners are not to be confused with tanning accelerators – which Paula does not recommend. Further, any amount of sun tanning is harmful for skin. Paula's Choice Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel does not offer any sun protection, so you must continue to use sunscreen if you will be outdoors or exposed to UV light.
