mixed feelings

I know that each skin reacts differently, but I hoped that, having a combination skin, the mask would be a great addition. The second I started applying it I could see my skin getting red and the burning sensation was unbearable. I immediately washed it off my face. I have used 1/2 a sample to cover my face in this process, and gave it a second try after a few seconds. The skin went red, but the stinging sensation was still there, not as painful as in the first place.Product Rating
I am glad that it was only a sample :). I do have bentonite clay, activated charcoal, and many other ingredients to make myself a face mask similar to this one. I am quite curious which of the ingredients is responsible with the irritation (my story seems identical to other people's story above), so that I can avoid it in other products. If Customer Care could help me in this direction, that would be great! I would LOVE to buy the mask, but with the clear irritation I am not sure I should invest the money. As far as I know, from all that Paula's Choice teaches us, this is a product to be avoided. Or is this part of the "healing" process? ;) Thanks!! Customer Care: Thank you for your review. We do suggest not using this product any longer if you notice stinging when applying it. While the response you have indicated is not typical, we do understand that each customer is uniquely different in how they will respond to products or ingredients. This along with everyday environmental factors can sometimes play a part in how someone will ultimately respond to a product or combination of products. Please know that we are working on another mask for oily skin that should debut later this year. If you have any questions, please contact customer care. We are happy to help.

great effect but burning!

This is really a fantastic mask that really minimizes the appearance of large pores, my skin was fresh, soft, looking healthy after using it. There is only one big disadvantage: it burns! It burns like hell. The first minute you have it on, it is painful. Which ingredient is responsable for that? It's almost not bearable but if you hold on and wait, your skin looks great afterwards.Product Rating

Assists the Battle Against Blemishes

As someone with combination skin prone to the odd breakout, I use a BHA 2% product daily and put on this mask when I feel a breakout coming on (after a heavy weekend, for example). The mask feels hot and uncomfortable for 30 seconds but if you can sit through this you will see results. If I have a blemish the mask visibly reduces it and speeds up the healing process, and it absolutely gets rid of any excess sebum, something which lasts all day. This mask is very effective at keeping spots at bay! (Posted on 20/07/2011)Product Rating -

I have oily skin and my skin is not particularly sensitive but almost as soon i put the mask on it started to sting and for me it also felt like it was burning. I thought Paula said that skincare should never hurt... this was the worst I ever had on, glykolic acid was nothing compared to this. should it really be like this?Product Rating
Customer Care: This mask is specially suitable for Normal to Oily/Combination, Oily Skin. However each person will respond differently to ingredients and products.

Not for sensitive skin

Like the reviewer below, I put this on my face and it started to sting. Within a minute, my skin felt extremely hot and the stinging sensation became worse. I decided to wash it off straight away to minimise irritation and my skin was extremely red. I normally love Paula's Choice products but I'd definitely skip this one if you're skin is remotely sensitive.Customer Care :We regret that our product was not what you may have expected. Our Customer Service will be more than happy to assist you in finding another product that will work better for you. Please note that Paula's Choice also has a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee return policy within 30 days of purchase.Product Rating

I have combination skin - my skin isn't super oily, just oily around my nose and between the brows, nose needs some blotting around lunchtime every day. After using this carbon mask,my skin feels refreshed and my nose is less oily during the day. (Posted on 10/12/2010)Product Rating -

If you are looking for a mask that really works - now you've found it! I was shocked that it REALLY REALLY works! Especially people with an oily skin - that is a must for you all. It is not an unneeded addition to your daily routine, this is something that finally works, and you feel it, and you see it. (Posted on 02/01/2010)Product Rating
Can be used once a week, daily or as often as needed to absorb oil. After cleansing and toning, dispense a nickel-sized amount and apply a thin layer all over the face and neck (if needed). Let dry for 10-15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with tepid to warm water. Follow with the appropriate Paula's Choice exfoliant, blemish product, moisturizer, and/or specialty product. Those with oily to very oily skin should use this mask a few times per week, while those with normal to dry skin can use it less frequently (once per week, for example).

I thought Paula didn't like clay masks or, at best, finds them unnecessary skin-care products. Did she change her mind?
Paula is not a big fan of most masks and she doesn't believe facial masks are an essential step in a person's skin-care routine. However, for women who want to incorporate them into their routines Paula developed masks that meet her standard of excellence.
